Revisiting the Mass of the Coma Cluster from X-ray Observations

چکیده

I re-examine mass estimates of the Coma cluster from pre-ASCA X-ray spectral observations. A large range of model dark matter distributions are examined, under the assumptions of hydrostatic equilibrium and spherical symmetry, to determine the widest possible allowed range on the total mass of the cluster. Within a radius of 1 Mpc, the total cluster mass is tightly constrained to be (6.2 ± 0.9) × 10 M⊙ and the ratio of luminous baryonic matter to total matter lies between 13% and 17%. Within a radius of 3 Mpc the total mass is (1.3 ± 0.5) × 10 M⊙ and the luminous matter fraction is 20%-40%. I find that the “universal” dark matter density profile proposed by Navarro, Frenk, and White, based on N-body simulations of a standard cold-dark-matter dominated Universe, predicts a steep temperature gradient within the core of the cluster that is a poor fit to the Coma data and can be rejected at greater than 99% confidence.

The Mass Profile of the Coma Galaxy Cluster

We use a new redshift survey complete to mR ≃ 15.4 within 4.25 o from the center of the Coma cluster to measure the mass profile of the cluster to r ∼ 5.5h Mpc. We extend the profile to r ∼ 10h Mpc with a further sample complete to mR = 15.4 in 42% of the area within a 10 radius and to mZw = 15.5 in the remaining area. Galaxies within this region are falling onto the cluster on moderately radia...

An X-ray Temperature Map of Coma

The Coma cluster of galaxies was long considered to be the archtype of a relaxed virialized cluster in a state of dynamical equilibrium (c.f. Kent and Gunn). There were however conflicting claims that Coma shows substructure, seen as a clumping of galaxies around the brightest galaxies in the cluster (c.f. Baier, Fitchett and Webster, and Mellier et al.). On the other hand, Geller and Beers 5 a...

DETECTION OF NON-RANDOM GALAXY ORIENTATIONS IN X-ray SUBCLUSTERS OF THE COMA CLUSTER

This study on the Coma cluster suggests that there are deviations from a completely random galaxy orientation on small scales. Since we found a significant coincidence of hot-gas features identified in the latest X-ray observations of Coma with these local anisotropies, they may indicate regions of recent mutual interaction of member galaxies within subclusters which are currently falling in on...

The Diffuse Soft Excess Emission in the Coma Cluster from the Rosat All-sky Survey

ROSAT All-Sky Survey data near the North Galactic Pole was analyzed in order to study the largescale distribution of soft X-ray emission from the Coma cluster. These ROSAT data constitute the only available X-ray observations of Coma that feature an in situ – temporally and spatially contiguous – background, with unlimited and continuous radial coverage. These unique characteristics of the ROSA...

Another Collision for the Coma Cluster

We describe a wavelet transform analysis of the ROSAT PSPC images of the Coma cluster. On small scales, ≤ 1 ′ , the wavelet analysis shows substructure dominated by two extended sources surrounding the two brightest cluster galaxies NGC 4874 and NGC 4889. On slightly larger scales, ∼ 2 ′ , the wavelet analysis reveals a filament of X-ray emission originating near the cluster center, curving to ...
